This volunteer opportunity is to assist Montachusett Opportunity Council at Green Acres, 13 Normandy Rd., Fitchburg MA. MOC provides many programs for under resourced families and children in local communities, including Gardner.
8-10 volunteers are needed for outdoor work at the site which may include: clearing brush, spreading mulch, planting, removing trash and helping with other needed improvements.
These projects have helped in Green Acres. MOC has a Homework center and a Summer Program for the youth in that community. The Butterfly Garden which is directly behind the MOC Homework Center has given the youth an up-front look at butterflies in their own habitat. This area would get really wet & muddy when it rained! But by improving the environment and placing a bioretention swale/also called a butterfly garden, this is no longer a muddy issue in this area. The Big Field and the recent Natural Play Space is still in the works to be completed but has been an area the kids can go and have fun! The Green Acres Community Garden Beds are a way residents can grow their own vegetables and fruits if they like to Garden - our initiative is to see more families having access to healthy foods right in their area where they live.
