Westminster Historical Society

The Westminster Historical Society is a non-profit membership-supported organization, currently operating in our headquarters at 110 Main Street in Westminster. We have a 13-member Board of Directors overseeing operations. The majority of the work of the Society is done by volunteers in committees, although we do have some part-time employees: an Administrative Assistant, a House and Grounds Director, and an Assistant Treasurer. Volunteers staff the Historical Society an additional 11 hours a week. The Society is regularly open Fridays 9-Noon. In addition we have evening and weekend public programs, and are available by request on weekends when visitors want to do research or buy items from the Gift Shop.
The Westminster Historical Society's mission is to save and share Westminster?s history. We collect and preserve items because their very existence will provide the evidence of our lives here. In addition, in order to make the past meaningful we engage people around us, providing a uniquely personal experience to make history come alive.
The Westminster Historical Society was founded in 1921 to care for artifacts and archives in the museum on the second floor of the Library on Main Street. Very quickly the organization took on a life of its own and donations or artifacts came in for preservation and the collections grew. In 1984 the Historical Society purchased its own home at 110 Main Street and membership grew to over 200+ members all over the country. An important focus has been the cataloging of artifacts given to the Society to preserve and exhibiting them in various locations in the area.
In addition, public programs increased dramatically with tours, Colonial Cooking for school children, monthly heritage programs for the public, and community programs such as the annual Plant Swap and Sale, the Town Wide Yard Sale and the Attic Treasures Sale.
