Volunteer: Aeroponic Tower Farming

Do you enjoy getting something all cleaned up and put to rights so it can operate smoothly? Do you like tinkering with mechanical things? Our aeroponic Tower Farm is looking for you!

Growing Places operates an indoor, 20-tower, aeroponic Tower Farm in the basement of its Leominster office building, where we grow herbs and greens for use in our produce distribution and processing programs.

Aeroponic growing, like hydroponic growing, does not use soil. Plant root systems are suspended in the air and the towers “rain” nutrient-amended water on them from above, using significantly fewer resources than hydroponic tanks or traditional in-ground growing. Our farm is entirely volunteer-run and in need of adult volunteers to assist with operations start to finish.

WHAT: harvesting, disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling 4-5 towers on a weekly basis WHO: volunteers able to perform physical tasks, such as scrubbing, lifting up to 15 pounds or using a stepstool, and who enjoy a calm working environment WHEN: Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (or earlier if weekly tasks are complete)

Volunteer: Produce Packing Team

Fresh Boxes of produce are on the move! Can you help us pack?

Growing Places is launching a new program! The Fresh Box program is packing boxes of fresh, local produce for  families and individuals in need in North Central MA. Once packed, they're on the move to our emergency food assistance partners, like Ginny's Helping Hand and the Gardner CAC, who will distribute them to the community.

We are looking for small groups of 2-3 adults and/or youth aged 14+ to help us pack the produce. This is a great opportunity to see up close how our local, NCMA food system works!

WHEN: On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, for 3-hour shifts, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. and/or 12 p.m. - 3 p.m., one-time or recurring opportunities available all season

WHAT: This is a physical opportunity! Together, we will carry boxes and bags of produce up to 25lbs. from refrigeration to our packing tables, pack boxes assembly-line-style, and then move the packed boxes back into refrigeration. We have rolling carts to assist.

WHERE: Indoors at our warehouse at the Doyle Estate in Leominster

Note: We ask everyone to wear closed-toe shoes for food and personal safety. Restrooms are available on site and can be reached up a small flight of steps. We recommend wearing casual, layered clothing for your comfort.

Pack a Fresh Box; move local food forward!
